Cordially welcome
In the course of the past years, the small town of Hohndorf in the Erzgebirge foreland with about 4000 inhabitants began to grow. Adjacent to its old city centre, a new residential area arose with handsome one- and two-family houses and a new shopping centre with handicraft businesses and shops as well as butcher, baker, café, pharmacy. Also a physician practice as well as wheelchair accessible culture and sport centre are in the vicinity.
In the middle of this residential area lies what the Hohndorfer citizens call the "Dorf im Dorf", or "village in the village". This dwelling facility is of special type, since mentally challenged and multiple-disabled persons, families with disabled relatives and older individuals live closely together on the ground floor and on two stories of the seven houses of the "village".
A comfortable home, room for personal preferences and interests, contacts at the work place and during leisure time, such as while daily shopping in the vicinity, means quality of life for everyone.
From the outside, it can't be seen that handicapped people live in the "village within the village". The village architecture consciously refrains from putting the physical and intellectual impairments of its residents in the foreground, but rather portrays their entirely normal desires for comfort, privacy and community.
The systematic implementation of "integrating housing forms", in which disabled and non-disabled, old and young all live together, pursues the rich tradition of the Theodor Fliedner Stiftung for the last 20 years.
